Planning: Who, Where, and When
Start by picking who will be in the room. Choose 3 to 6 people the person loves and respects. Think parents, siblings, a close friend, maybe an old coach or mentor. Leave out anyone with a grudge. If someone brings resentment, they will steer the conversation toward blame. That kills the whole thing fast.
Next, choose the setting. Pick a private, neutral place. A living room works. A kitchen table works. Avoid bars, restaurants, and anywhere the person feels cornered or watched. You want them comfortable enough to sit and listen.
Then think about timing. Plan for a time the person is most likely sober. Morning is often better than late night. Skip birthdays, holidays, and days already loaded with stress. Keep it simple and low key.
Here is the part people skip, and it matters most. Arrange the treatment placement before the intervention, not after. Call the program. Confirm the bed. Sort out insurance and transportation ahead of time.
Why? Because willingness fades fast. If your person says yes, that yes needs somewhere to go immediately. Not tomorrow. Not after a few phone calls. A packed bag by the door and a car ready to drive removes the excuses.
Do the boring logistics first. The conversation goes better when the door is already open.
